Plein Air

All are welcome to our paint outs!


Welcome to the Sanibel Captiva Art League 2023-24 Season of plein air painting.   All outdoor painting is naturally subject to weather conditions.  Unless otherwise noted, beginning November 30, 2023, we will meet at 10 am each Thursday due to Sanibel Causeway delays caused by repair workers. A brief friendly critique follows the morning session.

Walt Whitman's “Imaginary Lines” is the featured theme for the Sanibel-Captiva Art League sponsored art exhibit at BIG ARTS for the 2023-2024 season. This theme is open to broad interpretation. Artists are encouraged to think creatively about their work through the feelings contained in the verse. Well executed art that flows with the exhibit’s title is most desirable.

"In the Sea" Let your artwork be inspired by the thoughtful words of poet e. e. cummings

as he explores the theme of life and its many emotional experiences. Freshly rendered works are cordially invited as entries in this popular juried exhibition. This Captiva Island annual art exhibition is sponsored by the Captiva Civic Association (CCA) and the Sanibel-Captiva Art League (SCAL) and is open to all members of CCA and SCAL, as well as the Art Council of Southwest Florida.

Sanibel Public Library

Located at 770 Dunlop Rd, Sanibel, FL, the Sanibel Public Library has been recognized as one of the best libraries in the country, and has been consistently on the top of the list of places to visit on Sanibel.

Summer 2023 - Food for Thought - Stop by the library to enjoy a good read and view current works of art by members of the Sanibel-Captiva Art League. 


October 23, 2023 to January 2, 2024 - Resilience & Recovery - A juried exhibit at the Sanibel Public Library heralding the strength of nature and the ever-changing beauty of our sanctuary islands. 

This juried exhibit is open to all members of the Sanibel-Captiva Art League and all residents of Sanibel and Captiva.  Artists are encouraged to portray the challenges, emotional experiences, spectacular outcomes, and beauty emerging from sudden, life-altering change.

    March 18, 19, 20, 2024 - "Art In Bloom"

    This popular biennial show at the Sanibel Public Library pairs selected artists from the Sanibel-Captiva Art League with floral designers from the Shell Islands Garden Club, and features floral arrangements with coordinated paintings.  Additional information may be found on the Shell Islands Garden Club website at sanibelgardenclub.org

    March 15 - April 30, 2024 - "Sanibel Captiva Art League Juried Exhibition"

    SCAL Invites its members to submit original art to a juried exhibition of members’ work to be held from March 15 to April 30 2024 in the Sanibel Public Library. Theme: still life. Media: oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, gouache, graphite, pen & ink, or charcoal. Must be original work. No prints, No computerized art, No photographs. No Artificial Intelligence. Juror to be announced. See prospectus below.

    Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) Exhibit

    "Wild"

    The Bailey Homestead House, 1300 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, Florida


    CALL TO ARTISTS


    This exhibit will feature original works of art and is open to all members of the Sanibel-Captiva Art League and the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation.  The artwork and the exhibit will be representative of the theme "WILD" and align with the SCCF mission:  to protect and care for Southwest Florida's coastal ecosystems. 


    All artwork will be displayed inside the Bailey Homestead House.  This is a buy-it-off-the-wall exhibit; if your artwork sells, you may replace it with another suitable piece from your collection.  All exhibitors must serve as docent at least twice during the exhibition.

    Let your artwork be inspired by settings and images viewed on the property of the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village. 


    Take advantage of 3 formally scheduled plein air sessions for SCAL members on November 2, 2023, December 21, 2023, and February 1, 2024.  (See the SCAL plein air schedule in the PLEIN AIR section of this website.) 


    All artwork will be displayed in the buildings of the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village.  This is a buy-it-off-the-wall exhibit.  For detailed information, including a release and tags, click on the buttons below.


    There will be a wine and cheese reception on February 23rd from 4:00 - 6:00.
